Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger

History of the Rotary Club of Doncaster St. Leger

The Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger was chartered in September 1981 at a ceremony held at the Danum Hotel, Doncaster.

The dinner was attended by the Worshipful Mayor of Doncaster, Councillor Alex Grimson.  The Rotary District Governor was Terry Knowles and the Extension Officer was Past District Governor Roy Parsons.  There were 27 Charter Members led by Founder President John Mills, who was the Administrator of Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

The Club was a new addition to Rotary District 104.  In 1985 the Rotary Districts were reorganised and the club joined District 127, which was later renumbered to 1270.  The Club then met on Wednesday evenings at the Danum Hotel.

The Club takes its name from the oldest horse race in the world, the St Leger, which has been held on Doncaster Race Course since 1776.  It shares its territory with the Rotary Club of Doncaster and with the Rotary Club of Doncaster St George's.
